February 2019 I bought a BXT 29'er frame from the Amazon BXT store. It was the same price as AliXpress, and Amazon offers some customer service. I bought components one at a time, and ended up finding some great deals on Shimano SLX 11 speed and a light wheel and tire set. The rest came together every time I caught a sale or a good deal on decent generic China parts. I finally had it together in July 2019, and refined over the next 6 months. The end product was a 23lb rigid hardtail with 29x2.2" Continental tires, 1x11 speed, and hydraulic disc brakes. Carbon fiber seatpost, handlebar, and fork, Velocity Blunt 35mm wide rims (25mm inside).. The bike rides great, handles well, and operates as smoothly as any I've ever had the chance to ride. Much smoother than I expected a rigid hardtail to ride. Still going strong in 2021. The catch is, cycling still takes effort. Sitting near the old trailhead where I missed the first turn and slid down a hill to a watery landing. Ah, memories... An hour riding today, and I ended up with a mud spattered stripe down my back and inseams, and an achy body that's screaming at me as I wish for sleep.

A new post about a self propelled, two wheel contrivance. Amazing! That's a nice looking rig. I read all the posts when it was on the now defunct big box prison forum. It would have been at least a $3000 bike if you bought it from a shop. You rode an hour? If you haven't been riding regularly you might consider working back into it a little slower to avoid injury. Balls-out after winter hibernation is for the young & healthy my friend

sounds like a couple of fenders would help?

It was a good ride, nothing too hard, just these rolling Kentucky hills..
This BXT would compare directly to a 2016-2018 Trek CX bike, which would have been the $3000.00+ bike you mentioned. I could have finished out the 3k on Shimano XT or SRAM Eagle wireless components. Actually, I set a $1000.00 budget for this bike right from the start, and I did build a nice bike for $1005.00, but then I added a carbon fiber handlebar, and a different saddle. I was at $1100.00. The following year, I set out to build a single speed Schwinn Santis MTB, and when it just didn't work out as planned, I returned it to almost stock, and gave it to my son. The wheelset that was bought for that project, went on this bike.. So, I'm still calling it $1100.00.. I'd still be happy on the other wheelset. The weight lost in the newer wheelset was offset by the saddle change. Fenders would just add weight to an 'expensive-for-me' experiment in light weight MTB's.
Will ride it again when it's dry out there.

23 lbs! i'd be happy if my road bike weighed that! yeah, i'm playing the "add a pound, subtract half a pound" game, too.

23 lbs! ... i'm playing the "add a pound, subtract half a pound" game, too. You or the bike?
Check out the Bog fender & mud guard, cat. Have that on the old Deception. Don't remember the brand on the Bikes Direct bike but it's posted in that thread I think. We're talking a few ounces & they're flexible so crashes don't bother them.

This China bike is still alive and well It's basically unchanged since the 2021 posts. I do still ride it occasionally. I guess it was a better frame than I suspected, but then I am kinda easy on it.

I recall several of those in the debris pics of the downed commie balloon! Our F-22 ended chinese eco-shipping I guess.
Seriously, I wonder what the build cost will be for a 23lb bike in 2024?
