The criteria to make this list are meant to keep it low maintenance for those that are bike-wrench challenged, yet have the right configuration to be fully upgradable. The bike must have:
Threadless headset
Name brand trigger shifters or trigger/brake combo
Replaceable derailleur hanger
Disk brakes front AND rear

I don’t consider a suspension fork a prerequisite for a good trail bike. As with any bike, proper assembly is the key to a good riding experience. Never assume a Walmart assembler knew what he was doing.
700C Schwinn Kempo Men's Bike - Note the spoke weave on this bike
27.5" Schwinn Aluminum Comp - another older & reliable ride with a facelift
29" Men's Schwinn Boundary Mountain Bike
26" Merax Finiss A newcomer with extra bling
29" Schwinn Men's Santis Mountain Bike
29" Mongoose Impasse HD - Formerly marketed as the Deception through Walmart, the Impass was marketed though the now bankrupt Kmart. With SRAM grip shifters, it's the one exception to the trigger rule.
Hyper 29" Men's Ultra Lightweight Hydro-Form - Yes, surprisingly, a Hyper model made the list
