i believe what you're getting at is that everything depends on having an SIS-compatible freewheel on the rear, then getting SIS-compatible derailleurs and shifters to match.
violet currently has 14 speeds, 2 in front and 7 in back, and takes 700c tires, so 700c rims. i think someone started, then abandoned the conversion. she came to me with ancient shimano derailleurs front and back, iirc, i swapped in ancient suntour derailleurs and aftermarket "analog" stem shifters.
will check sheldon. i've been there before but never focused on the SIS question. there's a ton of info there.

Front double should be easy enough without changing sprockets - probably find a 3 speed shifter, only using two speeds, then set the high & low limit screws on the front derailleur. I've got trigger shifters on a 2x8 setup & only use 2 positions on the left shifter with no problem.

today i stopped by the bike co-op and in passing i mentioned that i was thinking of converting violet the vintage peugeot to indexed shifting, and the man suggested i put grip shifters on it, if i can figure a way to get them past the bends in the drop bars... just like the bars and shifters i just took off the denali. i had a good chuckle over that.

why not put it on the straight part on the bottom of the bar? The hand grip tubes below the brake levers.

so many possibilities! i donated the revo shifters and split road bars to the co-op, and somebody got them, so i'll have to start over. maybe i'll take the a050 thumb shifters off the denali, or get another set, and then another rear derailleur like came on the denali. hmm, maybe put the thumb shifters on the drops? that would be different! and the old open cage gt-luxe can become a museum piece again.

Yeah the grip shifters are for 25.4mm bars & the drop bars are probably 22.2. You could just order shims from Niagara cycle to go with it.

wore my bike coop tshirt today while doing some yard work, passerby asked me about it. that's about 1/2 dozen people i've referred. i should be on the payroll, except they don't have one.

was riding my peugeot up the sidewalk, passed a neighbor kid maybe 12 yrs old who wanted to race on his little wal-mart bmx. i figure in a race to the end of the block (maybe 20 yds) if he's strong, he would win. opinions? he did admire my helmet. smart kid.

ok, i've been to sheldon's and immediately overloaded. but i've decided to buy another pair of thumb shifters from bikeworld, and a cheap shimano rear deraileur. at some point i will try to measure the gear spacing on the 7 sped unknown-provenance freewheel. if i need to replace the freewheel, i'll do it, same goes for the chain. plan to order the shifters tonight. the move is going very slowly electrician still fiddling with the AC, painter waiting on the AC (humidity), movers (us) waiting on the painters. i want to get out of this house and away from the neighbor, though i have learned to ignore him and walk right past like he's invisible. this seems to p!$$ him off even more, which is good because maybe he'll do something really stupid, or bad because he'll do something really stupid. hoping to start moving in earnest next week. meanwhile....

I missed this. The kid would get a big jump on you but a bmx with little wheels & gear is maxed out on the 5th or 6th stroke. Don't think you could beat him in 20 yards. You could at 40 I bet using 2 speeds. Take off the marvin the martain helmet tho - cut down on the wind resistance.

Keep in mind it may be easier to swap out the rear wheel before it's all done. Still thinking the euro hub may be an issue. Worth a shot tho.
Summer moves seem to be the worst. Hope you're not humping couches, washers, etc. And always have your pepper spray & stun gun at the ready.

finally got around to ordering for violet a pair of a050 thumb shifters and a tz31 (tourney) rear derailleur, which appears to be the same as the one on my denali. the a050s are obsolete, hence hard to source. using bikeworld again, so we'll see how it goes. if the cluster is compatible, i should be good to go.

I didn't know thumb shifters are indexed. Never used them. just for sh!ts & giggles, you might try the new shifters with the old derailleur. Although for the indexing to work, it's matched to the throw of the derailleur. Just thought it would be worth a try before breaking the chain.

the right-side shifter (7x) is indexed, the left (2/3x) is not. i'll try them with the old derailleurs first. the old rear derailleur is an ancient 70s analog (friction) suntour v-gtluxe, which is open-cage, hence no chain-breaking until i decide to swap on the "new" tourney. the tz31 is supposedly low-end but not horrible. i say "new" because apparently this particular model is obsolete (hence under $10) and has been superceded by later models.
i think i tried the thumb shifters on the peugeot with the v-gt earlier and was not satisfied, this is why i'm trying to go full indexed. my memory is not so hot lately. good thing i write stuff down. now, if i can just remember what bike forum i post to...

bikeworld says order shipped today. 4 days in fulfillment. evidently they are selling things they don't have in stock. so much for "just in time" inventory management. i expect it might arrive monday or tuesday.

so far as i can tell, these folks are slow but don't mess up orders. i painted myself into the corner with the a050s as they are obsolete and not everyone has them.

it's been 11 days since they allegedly shipped. this must be what they call snail mail. i'm going to send them an e-mail explaining why i won't be shopping with them in the future.
